Movidia, a Dublin-based start-up chip designer, has announced the launch of a new multimedia processor that could allow video-on-phone editing features.

According to Movidia, the MA1110 processor is designed to appeal to mobile social networking users in order to enable high performance in-phone video post-production in real time. It is able to perform a range of complicated video-editing tasks, including super resolution zoom, real-time image stabilisation, slow motion and colour matching.

The company also claims that the MA1110 will be able to support highly sophisticated video post-production features that have previously only been available on desktop computers. Sean Mitchell, CEO of Movidia, comments: "Network operators and phone manufacturers are queuing up to release 'Facebook phones', or offer individual video features like slo-mo. "Yet until now no phone has been able to perform complex video editing on a phone in real time. This is something we sought to address in order to really deliver a compelling user experience to unleash the real growth in this market."

The announcement over the MA1110 comes a month after a survey conducted by Orangefound that the number of people accessing social networking sites on their mobile had risen 277 per cent between June and October 2008. Resultantly, Movidia's technology is sure to appeal to savvy users of smartphones with advanced features, like the Apple iPhone, T-Mobile G1, BlackBerry Bold and Nokia N96.

The MA1110 will make its debut at Mobile World Congress, the annual global mobile industry expo due to be held in Barcelona next month, with production set to begin later this year.
