Finnish mobile company Nokia has announced that an updated version of the Sports Tracker application is available for the Nokia 5800. The app is a service that makes use of GPS technology to allow users to track speed, distance and the length of exercise sessions.

Additionally, users are able to input their favourite routes and paths and upload them to a map on the Sports Tracker site. It will now come as part of the Nokia 5800 package. The recent Mobile World Congress saw the Nokia Sports Tracker take the top spot as the Best Mobile Internet Service, lending weight to an industry wide opinion that GPS based systems are amongst the most innovative new Smartphone technologies.

According to NokNok - a news site devoted to Nokia - the new update to Sports Tracker is designed to take advantage of the capabilities of the Nokia 5800 and other Symbian S60 5th edition phones - including the Nokia N97 when it becomes available. The changes are said to make the most of the touchscreen features of these devices and improve stability of the app.

The applications market is currently a strong one. First made popular with the Apple apps store - where users could download numerous applications to personalise their iPhones - maybe other smartphone providers have noticed the potential of downloadable services.

As Nokia continues to promote packages such as Sports Tracker and Comes With Music, it seems clear that the mobile manufacturer has a plan to withstand the recession - by offering phones with added functionalities that blend into the lifestyle choices of the user.
