Mobile network operator T-Mobile has confirmed that it will be releasing more smartphones which run on the Google Android operating system over the course of 2009.

In a recent interview with wireless industry news source, Fierce Wireless, Neville Ray - senior vice president of engineering and operations at T-Mobile USA - said that the company planned to launch more G series phones this year. Speaking to Chris Pearson, President of 3G America, Mr Ray said: "Our primary focus is consumer-based devices. As the year progresses there will be a significant number of HSPA-capable smart phones. We will be launching more G series phones and other products."

Together with HTC, T-Mobile launched the first ever Google phone - the G1 - in the last quarter of 2008. The success experienced by the G1 has meant that it has emerged as a viable competitor to leading smartphones like the BlackBerry and the iPhone. However, T-Mobile's announcement comes just as many of its competitors are gearing up to release their own Android handsets as well. In the last few months, mobile phone makers Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Samsung have all stated that they will bring out G-phones over the coming year.

In the interview with Fierce Wireless, Mr Ray stressed T-Mobile's consumer-focussed ethos. He said: "We think there is a sweet spot for us to bring compelling devices to the market. We have had success with the G1 and the Samsung Behold HSPA touch-capable device." He also added that T-Mobile would be launching a data card product "in the coming weeks and months".
