What are operating systems?

All smartphones need a dedicated operating system to run. The operating system manages your phone's power and performance, in the same way that Windows® manages your home PC.

Are they all different?

Yes. The OS your phone runs determines the way that it looks and feels, and all platforms operate differently. Some are based around homescreens, while others favour live hubs or folders and menus.

What about apps?

Your phone will only be able to support applications which have been developed to run on its operating system. Some apps are available across lots of platforms, but others are exclusive to a particular operating system.

Android

The Android platform gives you access to over 250,000 amazing apps and a world of great Google services. It's fast, powerful and always getting even smarter and better, with brilliant new features being introduced all the time. If you're into gaming, comics, eBooks and social networking then Android could be a great choice. Some of the smartest, fastest phones around now support this increasingly popular, fun and exciting OS.
